The Barrow Group Theatre Company Opens Stefanie Ludyny Art Gallery Showing Paintings by Janice Williams Mueller

New York, NY July 20, 2004 -- The Barrow Group Arts Center has added the Stafanie Ludyny Gallery on its third floor providing support to another visual art media. On display until August 15th, 2004 are the large colorful oil paintings by artist Janice Williams Mueller.
The Barrow Group (recipient of the 1995 Drama Desk Award for OFF-OFF BROADWAY EXCELLENCE) is a non-profit theatre organization that serves as an artistic home for some of New York's finest actors, directors, playwrights and designers.

"It's a joy to be among truly courageous artists. The combination of theatre, music and (visual) art (at The Barrow Group) is an inspiration to creative artists at every level." Ann Reinking Recipient of the 2004 TBG Artistic Achievement Award.

At the Barrow Group's Annual Fundraising Event, which has enabled the building and extension of a new theatre space, Ann Reinking accepted the TBG Artistic Achivement Award and spoke excitedly about the paintings. "They are for sale? ….. Buy them," she said impassionedly.

Janice Williams Mueller's works are layered with colors and packed with symbols as the artist explores a journey through history, mankind's and her own. "I think of the paintings on two levels, one is how we reference things in the past, the way past. We have these symbols, the labyrinth or spirals, which have been present throughout human development and they are still present. They have meaning but we don't know what their actual meaning is.

"I use the surface to refer to our present meaning of what we think they are and the under level to refer to the past."

The Barrow Group is a non-profit professional theater company, professional training school and arts center located in New York City. All Barrow Group activity occurs within the walls of TBG's new art center, located at 312 W. 36th Street in Manhattan's burgeoning Fashion District. The art center provides performance and studio space at affordable rates and gallery space for some of New York's finest visual artists.
