New Exhibit "Elements" featuring the paintings of Judith Anderson and Katherine Leighnor at Baxter Chang Patri Fine Art.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA February 19, 2004--The paintings of two California based women artists will be featuredin the new "Elements" exhibit at Baxter Chang Patri Fine Art March 4th through May 4th,
2004. A reception for the artists will be held March 4th from 5:30-8:30PM.
Water, fire, and earth link the thematic concerns and imagery of Judith Anderson and Katherine Leighnor richly colored works. Anderson's layered and poured canvasses are inspired by the unique properties of the Pacific Madrone tree and the larger arena of transformations in nature. Katherine Leighnor's watercolor and resin creations evoke the radiant energy of light as well as immersion in water.
San Francisco based artist Judith Anderson has created works inspired by an interest and study of the Pacific Madrone Tree. She investigates the intersection of the organic and the scientific. They meet in an abstract forum in the search for harmony and life. Anderson observes and photographs details of the Natural world in various stages of growth and decay.
Using these images as a departure point, multiple layers of oil color are poured on the canvas to create nebulous shapes of emerging form conjuring a sense of place that is both familiar yet suspended in time and space.
Katherine Leighnor's work is inspired by the phenomena of Sunspots, the cyclical increase of electromagnetic activity that occurs on the sun and the mystery of how it's radiant energy effects us. The paintings are watercolor on paper, mounted on wood panel, resin coated and then sanded.
The matte surface has a quality that is both sensuous and inviting while being repellent at the same time, and thus attaining a mysterious effect.
San Francisco art critic Kenneth Baker writes, "Leighnor's pictures are abstractions in which materials- watercolor and resin- and process determine much of the visual outcome. Yet her pieces irresistibly suggest astronomical photographs: infrared images of sunspots or views of distant nebulae in negative."
Leighnor's work is in numerous collections including the Banana Republic and the Gap Collection's in San Francisco.
Later in the month, on March 24th both artists will speak their work to a group of women professionals gathered at Baxter Chang Patri Fine Art during National Women's History Month and sponsored by American Express.
